Retinol 101
What is Retinol?
Retinol is considered the GOLD STANDARD when it comes to skin care. It’s giving you the results you want, no matter your skin concern. Adding Retinol to your skincare routine is a GAME CHANGER. But what is it?
Retinol is part of the Retinoid family, and the terms are used interchangeably. Retinoids are a derivative of Vitamin A and comes in many forms, available both over the counter and with a prescription. Retinol, Retinyl palmitate, Retinaldehyde and Adapalene are all available over the counter and Tretinoin or Tazarotene are available with a prescription.
Retinol is considered the GOLD STANDARD because it has the most research behind it with proven results.
What does it do for your skin?
Retinol stimulates cell turnover, basically meaning that it slows down aging. Cell turnover is the process of shedding dead skin cells from the surface of the skin and replacing them with new, younger, healthy skin cells. Many external and internal factors will slow down cell turnover, causing your skin to look dull, textured, and show fine lines and wrinkles.
In addition to stimulating cell turnover, Retinol also boost collagen and elastin production (the key part of your skin that makes it look firm and youthful). As you age, your natural collagen and elastin start to break down, making your skin look thin and saggy.
Retinol has also been proven to help with other skin conditions such as acne, large pores, hyperpigmentation, and more!

TIPS for use:
When you first start using retinol, start with once a week, then after about a month, use 2-3 times per week.
On days you are not using retinol, you can exfoliate with an exfoliator of your choice (including AHAs, BHAs, and mechanical exfoliants).
Do not use retinol with leave on acne products (ie, Benzoyl Peroxide, BHA, Salicylic acid).
Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun; make sure you are using a sunscreen SPF in the morning.
Retinol should be applied at night. It is not recommended for daytime use as the sun can degrade the product on your skin, making it less effective.
